What's keeping you up at night?
I used to think that was a great question for uncovering organizational pain points.
Now I’m not such a fan.
Because there’s always something that could conceivably keep you up at night.
- The topic of tomorrow’s meeting
- Recruitment and retention
- That comment your boss made
- General uncertainty about the world
And I hope that even amidst the most chaotic of circumstances, you can get a sound nights sleep.
Because your best shot at approaching your toughest challenges is to be well-rested.
Here are some tips to help you sleep at night when your mind would rather focus on the challenge of the day.
- Schedule time during your workday to focus on your most pressing challenges
- Establish a hard cut-off time for working / checking email at night
- Avoid reading about or discussing complex topics the hour before bedtime
- Shift your attention from your mind to your body with gentle movement or breathwork before bed
- Use a guided meditation, yoga nidra or relaxation playlist to wind down
Beyond those tips, how you time your sun exposure, exercise, screen time and caffeine consumption will all contribute to your night’s rest.
If something is keeping you up at night, spend as much time exploring your relationship to challenge and stress-reduction strategies as you do on the challenge itself.
